2008-12: EU-Project FREIGHTVISION develops an Action Plan for sustainable Freight Transport in Europe

Elaborating a consolidated vision for the future

To influence the transport system of the future it is necessary to develop today a shared vision what the desirable future is and how future in freight transport should be shaped. That’s why the European Commission funds the project “FREIGHTVISION – Vision and Action Plan for European Freight Transport until 2050” within the 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013). Project’s goal is to bring together various stakeholders to develop a consolidated action plan for a sustainable, efficient and environmental friendly freight transport system.

What is with regards to freight transport the desirable future and how can this future be reached? This is the central question in the project FREIGHTVISION. For this purpose various stakeholders representing industry, NGOs, infrastructure operators, transport operators, technology suppliers, European Commission and national representatives come together at four meetings to discuss status (technology, policy and trends), forecasts, scenarios and action plan. In this FORESIGHT meetings and discussions a common understanding about future development and sphere of influence shall be developed.

The goal of the project is to propose an action plan both for transport and technology policy which is supported by the stakeholders. This action plan should ensure a sustainable freight transport system with special emphasis on GHG emissions, dependency on fossil fuels, congestion and accidents.

The project is funded by the EU-DG TREN and the consortium consists of thirteen partners. AustriaTech – Federal Agency for Technological Measures coordinates the project. On September 29 & 30 the project was started. The duration is 18 months.
