2009-08: XIII Euro Working Group on Transportation Meeting (Advances in Transportation Systems Analysis) Conference by Silvio di Re

23rd - 25th September 2009 Department of Structural and Transportation Engineering of University of Padua, Italy

One of the topics addressed is “Intelligent Transportation Systems” and DITS (Dipartimento di Idraulica, Trasporti e Strade, University of Rome) will be participating in the conference, presenting part of the technical solutions analysed within the implementation rules and guidelines workpackage (WP14) and discussing how to overcome the problems of the lack of interoperability and compatibility of systems due to the number of players and processes involved in complex transport chains.

The focus of the conference is very technical and DITS is looking forward to presenting some of the results achieved in terms of interoperability of freight management systems and the possible implementation of a European common framework based on Freightwise. Also, the use of the Information Packages will be outlined as a means of standardisation for different companies and/or business structures. In fact, although the development of the ICT is rapidly increasing and facilitating communication on a technical level, there are a number of additional aspects which have to be addressed if the communication along the intermodal chains is to be efficient. One is the need for common definitions and a common architecture.

The main objective of the proposal is to introduce the Freightwise Architecture as a reliable and practicable solution for the actual implementation of freight transport systems, and to show how it achieves systems interoperability through the use of standardisation mechanisms.

A secondary objective is to show how the Freightwise Architecture can be input for a European standard framework for the development and integration of ICT systems and ITS architectures in intermodal freight transport management.

In outline, at the moment DITS will present:

  • Short introduction to the framework proposed by Freightwise;
  • Possible solutions for an European architecture for intermodal transport systems;
  • ICT solutions within the context of intermodality;
  • The information packages as means to standardise the communication.
